The Parnell Memorial Library, sponsored by the Parnell Memorial Library Foundation and in collaboration the City of Montevallo Public Works Department, has successfully installed the first permanent StoryWalk® in the state of Alabama. The StoryWalk® is located in the library garden and pecan orchard.

StoryWalk® is a wonderful way for adults and their young children or grandchildren to combine literacy skills and healthy exercise as they walk to each of the 20 reading stations while enjoying the beauty of the Library Enrichment Garden. The activity combines exercise and reading to further enhance health and literacy in children and adults. StoryWalk® is a free activity that is accessible during normal park hours. It’s also the perfect activity to enjoy while practicing responsible social distancing. Bring your walking shoes, your reading glasses, and enjoy StoryWalk® at the Parnell Memorial Library!

The first installment of StoryWalk® features the book “The Curious Garden” written and illustrated by Peter Brown. This New York Times bestseller is considered a modern classic, and with its inspiring story and vivid illustrations, “The Curious Garden” is sure to be a big hit with children and adults alike. Permission was generously granted by the author and publisher for the use of this book in the installation.

This project was made possible by the Parnell Memorial Library Foundation, and installed by the City of Montevallo Public Works Department. The StoryWalk Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition (VBPC) and the Kellogg Hubbard Library.
